One day at the guitar store, a regular told me offhandedly that as a teen, he bounced a George Winston cassette from one tape deck to another, filtered through reverb and chorus pedals as an experiment. It was a fascinating idea to me, and one that I was eager to try.

I can hardly claim a deep and abiding fandom of Winston, but this experiment was a fruitful one. Bending and filtering his recordings gave me enough distance from his Windham Hill glossy lilt to snap into focus his harmonic atmosphere, uncanny melodies, and particular sense of swing.

The process for each of these songs was pretty similar. I'd scroll through George Winston recordings until one jumped out without giving it too much thought, slowed it down between 15-50%, and then experimented with tape saturation and ambient reverb plugins until it felt right. Then, I'd try to find a complimentary "found sound" recording to contribute to atmosphere.

Full disclosure: I take no credit for the recordings or compositions themselves, and only share them here in the hopes that you enjoy them, and can further your own appreciation of George Winston and the things that made his musicianship so singular.
